Masako Mori

Special Advisor to the Prime Minister on Women’s Empowerment

Tomoko Hayashi is Director-General of Gender Equality Bureau in the Cabinet Office. She reports to the Prime Minister and the Minister for Gender Equality as the head of the national machinery for promoting gender equality in Japan.

Before the above appointment in August, 2020, Tomoko Hayashi was Director-General for Economic and Fiscal Affairs, serving as Vice Chair of the OECD Economic Policy Committee and supporting the Prime Minister at the G7/G20 Summit meetings as the chief representative of the Cabinet Office.

She joined the government as an economist in 1987. She has held various positions of economic research, forecasting and macroeconomic policy-making, including Director for Macroeconomic Policy Coordination with the Bank of Japan, and Director for Economic Policy Framework in charge of medium- and long-term fiscal consolidation issues.

In the academic field, she has taught the Japanese economy at the Graduate School on Public Policy of the University of Tokyo since 2010. Her major publications include Macroeconomic Policy Frameworks (2003), Inflation Target and Monetary Policy (2006) (with Takatoshi Ito), and Global Financial and Economic Crisis (2010) (with Kazuo Ueda et al). She is a board member of the Japan Association of Business Cycle Studies and a member of the Japanese Economic Association.

Dr. Jun Suzuki joined Teijin Limited after he earned an M.S. in Zoology from the Graduate School of Science, University of Tokyo in 1983. He was awarded a Ph.D. in Medical Science from Osaka University in 1996.

After 28 years of career in the healthcare business, he was appointed Teijin Group Corporate Officer, Chief Marketing Officer and Director, BRICs Business in 2012. In April 2013, he became Teijin Group Executive Officer and became the Member of the Board, Executive Officer in June of the same year.　

He was appointed President and CEO of Teijin Limited in April 2014. Currently Dr. Suzuki is Chairperson of Teijin Limited since April 2022.

Keiko Tashiro began her career with the Daiwa Securities Group in April 1986, following her graduation from Waseda University with a BA in Political Science. She received an MBA from Stanford University in 1991 and attended the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School in 2011.

She has held various positions at Daiwa, including overseas assignments in Singapore, London and New York. In Japan, in addition to her role as Head of Investor Relations between 1999 and 2005, she spent six years (2005-2011) in the retail division of the Group, expanding the non-branch channel (online and call center) and defining a business model for the Group’s retail operations. She held the position of Senior Managing Director, Head of Fixed Income, Currency and Commodities for two years (2011-2013) before serving as Executive Managing Director and Chairperson of Daiwa Capital Markets America from 2013-16. She was appointed Senior Executive Managing Director of Daiwa Securities Group in April 2016 and Deputy President in April 2019.

She serves various roles in the development of our economy systems:

• Vice Chairman at the Japan Association of Corporate Executive
• Trustee of the IFRS foundation
• Member of the Harvard Business School Japan Advisory Board
• Member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on Responsive Financial Systems

Kathy Mitsuko Matsui is a General Partner of MPower Partners, Japan’s first ESG-focused global VC fund. She was the former vice chair of Goldman Sachs Japan, co-head of Macro Research in Asia and chief Japan equity strategist. Kathy was ranked No. 1 in Japan Equity Strategy by Institutional Investor multiple times. She was chosen by The Wall Street Journal as one of the "10 Women to Watch in Asia" for her work on the "Womenomics" theme and was also named to Bloomberg Markets magazine’s “50 Most Influential” list in 2014.

Kathy was chief Japan strategist for Barclays de Zoete Wedd Securities and worked at theExport-Import Bank of Japan’s Washington, DC office. She was a policy commentator for Japan’s Cabinet Office and has served on numerous Japanese government committees aimed at promoting gender diversity.

Kathy serves as an external board director of Fast Retailing Inc., adjunct professor at Kyoto University’s Graduate School of Management, board member of the Asian University for Women (AUW) Support Foundation, chair of the Board of Councilors (Japan) of the US-Japan Council, director of the Fast Retailing Foundation, member of the Council on Foreign Relations, The Nature Conservancy Asia Pacific Council, the Bretton Woods Committee Advisory Council, Keizai Doyukai, and the Japan Society Fund Against Breast Cancer. She previously served as an external board director for Paidy.

Kathy earned an AB, magna cum laude, in Social Studies from Harvard University and an MA from Johns Hopkins University, School of Advanced International Studies. She conducted research on Japanese foreign policy at Kobe University Graduate School on a Rotary Scholarship.

David E. Weinstein is the Carl S. Shoup Professor of the Japanese Economy at Columbia University. He is also the director at CJEB, co-director of Columbia’s APEC Study Center, co-director of the Japan Project at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), and a member of the Center for Economic Policy Research and the Federal Economic Statistics Advisory Committee. Previously, Professor Weinstein was chair of the Department of Economics and a senior economist as well as a consultant at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, and the Federal Reserve Board of Governors. He is the recipient of many grants and awards, including five National Science Foundation grants, an Institute for New Economic Thinking grant, a Bank of International Settlements Fellowship, and a Google Research Award.
